Nalligigakku (Because I Love Her)

Project Spotlight: An Arctic indie rocker sings about life and love in Nunavut.

Land Creating Representation
Four musicians play their instruments on a wooden platform in an arctic landscape.

“Nalligigakku (Because I Love Her)” is a funky and fun summer love song, performed by Arctic indie rocker Joey Nowyuk. The video was shot on location in Joey’s hometown of Pangnirtung, Nunavut.

The song was produced by Thor Simonsen (Kelly Fraser, Aasiva) and Dale Penner (Nickelback, The Matthew Good Band), the song is the first release off Joey’s debut album, Tumitit—meaning “your footsteps” in Inuktitut—set released in June 2021. Joey’s beat-heavy, guitar driven songs tell stories of his life in Nunavut, Canada, always shining a ray of optimism and hope throughout.
